Megan Tapley Ceramics

Ceramics has become a visceral passion, an avenue in which my emotions become the most prominent part of my artistic practice. My work focuses on women’s bodily autonomy and how those rights are critical in creating a society that respects women. Each voluptuous vessel is decorated with
chaotic patterns representing the dichotomy between my identity’s controlled and uncontrolled parts. These vessels crave to be touched and intimately interacted with. The work is rooted in repetitive processes that correlate to the joys, traumas, fears, and my general life experiences. Most of my
childhood was engulfed in traditional feminine forms of craft such as collage and textiles. These childhood infatuations are characterized by the pattern-making on the form’s surface. Hand-building the vessels creates temperament on the surface, producing a connection between the viewer and me. The carving of the pieces is associated with the negativity that surrounds my identity and the loss of my rights as an American woman. The act of painting and removing the underglaze restructures my emotions and gives me the stability to be confident in my existence. To fill my carved marks with
underglaze is like a scar healing a wound. The limited use of glazes puts the clay at the forefront, reflecting the raw feelings that I continue to grapple with; perceiving myself as no more than a baby-making machine, as my societal role creates a recognition of being lost within my identity.
