Creating Pattern

This week I started making patterns on one of the pots that I’ve built. I’ve been inspired by the African pottery I’ve been looking at as well as the overlap I’ve noticed within 1970s wallpapers and fabrics.

By using a small cookie cutter I was able to create the ovals that I used to attach to the pot. Not surprisingly this took a really long time to do and I’m not as happy as I could be with the overall craftsmanship as I was trying to do this quickly so my clay wouldn’t dry out unevenly. In the future I might roll out my slabs on the slab roller instead in order to get more of the ovals at a similar thickness throughout. I also would space the ovals in a staggered pattern next time instead of trying to have each align vertically.

Other than that I’ve been starting on some smaller planter pots, bisque firing my first large pot and reclaiming some not so great pieces.
